Deutsch DTM Connectors Explained – Applications, Wire Size, and Terminal Types
Share
What Is a Deutsch DTM Connector?
The Deutsch DTM connector is a compact, environmentally sealed connector system designed for low-current automotive and motorsport electrical applications.
The DTM series is commonly used in standalone ECU wiring, professional engine harness construction, PDM systems, and sensor integrations where a small footprint and reliable sealing are required.
Compared to larger DT and DTP connectors, DTM connectors are specifically engineered for 20–22 AWG signal wiring and low-amperage control circuits.
When Should You Use a DTM Connector?
DTM connectors are ideal for:
• MAP, IAT, coolant temperature, and pressure sensors
• Flex fuel sensors
• Hall effect sensors
• CAN High / CAN Low signal circuits
• Turbo speed sensors
• Auxiliary ECU outputs
• Compact subharness disconnect points
If a circuit carries signal-level current rather than high amperage load, the DTM series is typically the appropriate choice.
DTM vs DT Connectors – What’s the Difference?
The primary difference between DTM and DT connectors is size and intended wire range.
DTM Connectors
• Designed for 20–22 AWG wiring
• Smaller overall footprint
• Ideal for sensor and signal circuits
DT Connectors
• Designed for larger wire sizes
• Suitable for higher current circuits
• Larger housing size
For compact motorsport harness builds where space and routing density matter, DTM connectors are often preferred.
Are DTM Connectors Waterproof?
DTM connectors are environmentally sealed when assembled correctly using proper terminals and wedgelocks.
They are designed to protect against moisture, dirt, and engine bay contaminants when installed using correct crimp tooling and appropriate wire seals.
Like all sealed connectors, performance depends on proper terminal crimping and installation technique.
Open Barrel vs Solid Barrel DTM Terminals
DTM terminals are available in two common styles:
Open Barrel Terminals
• Stamped and formed
• Common in motorsport harness construction
• Require open-barrel crimp tooling
Solid Barrel Terminals
• Machined style construction
• Typically crimped using solid-barrel tooling
• Preferred by some builders for specific tooling setups
Terminal choice often depends on build strategy and crimp tooling preference.
Why DTM Connectors Are Popular in Motorsport Harness Builds
Professional motorsport harness construction prioritizes:
• Compact routing
• Serviceability
• Environmental protection
• Consistent terminal retention
The DTM series supports these requirements while maintaining a smaller footprint than many alternative connector systems.
For standalone ECU conversions and sealed PDM systems, DTM connectors provide a reliable low-current interface solution.
